Wenzelsmarkt Christmas Market

Bautzen - the oldest Christmas market in Germany

As various chronicles report, in 1384 King Wenceslas IV granted the town of Budissin the right to hold a free meat market. From St. Michael's Day on Sundays, every butcher was allowed to sell his meat publicly at the market. The butchers had the right of this meat sale until Christmas.

In 1402 all previous markets in the town were put under special protection by a decree of King Wenceslas IV and further markets were forbidden. This decree was confirmed in 1505 by King Vladislaus with a document and with it the free meat market, as it was held in Budissin "since ancient times for more than a hundred years and far beyond people's memory". This also speaks for the year 1384.
